In the late 1960s, Lockheed marketed a commercial version of the USAF C-5A Galaxy to commercial airlines in an effort to increase sales of the costly aircraft. Dubbed the L-500, the aircraft was first ordered by Pan American World Airways. Five aircraft were delivered in the basic Pan Am Cargo scheme with a white upper fuselage and vertical stabilizer, blue cheatline, and bare metal belly.
